Initiated by the Department of Health, Culture and Sports; Marmara University Faculty Member Dr. Mehdi Genceli told the behind the scenes of the Khojaly Massacre.

Dr. Mehdi Genceli described that terrible day 27 years ago: “The Armenian army launched an attack on the defenseless city of Khojaly on February 26, 1992, with the help of a Soviet army regiment that remained in Karabakh after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Armenian army, which did not allow the civilians to leave the city, committed a terrible massacre in the city. In the city of Khojaly with a population of 7 thousand, 613 Azerbaijani citizens lost their lives, including 106 women, 70 old people and 63 children. 487 people, 76 of whom were children, survived the massacre with serious injuries. 275 people were taken prisoner. No news has been received from 150 of these captives until today. In the massacre, 8 families were completely destroyed, 25 children lost their parents and 130 children lost one of their parents.”

Dr. Mehdi Genceli stated that Human Rights Watch described the incident as the biggest massacre in the Nagorno-Karabakh War and continued his words as follows: “In 1994, the Azerbaijani Parliament declared the massacre in Khojaly to be genocide. In the intervening period, the parliaments of many countries have declared that they recognize the incident as genocide." Despite all this, Genceli said that the perpetrators of the incident did not receive any punishment and that they were made heroes by the Armenian state, and that the Azerbaijani state continues its efforts to punish the criminals in international diplomacy. And also, answered those who were curious about the issue.
